When the young Pakistani opener, Imam ul Haq, started his international career, his selection was seen in the context of a nephew’s relationship to the chief selector Inzamam ul Haq, but Imam has proved that Chief selector Inzamam has selected him in the team not on the basis of him being his nephew but on the basis of his outstanding performances.
In addition to his selection, Imam ul Haq has also discussed in detail the friendship and the one-day record opening partnership with Fakhar Zaman.
In Bolivia against Zimbabwe, Imam ul Haq and Fakhar Zaman made 304 runs for the first wicket partnership, breaking Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga’s previous record of 286. When asked about how he felt while coming out to bat that day, he said:
“When it became a world record we did not know. But when I went out, Fakhar told me that I think maybe this partnership is the highest opening partnership ever.”
It was just a moment of pride as we did not know about the world record but when we went to the dressing room it was then that we found out that it was a world record.
“I enjoy playing alongside Fakhar Zaman,” says Imam ul Haq about friendship with Fakhar Zaman. Our friendship is also very good, and we know each other very well. Although in the Pakistan team, both of us have been batting together, just a few matches, but both of us have been batting out for Habib Bank for two years in the Domestic Cricket.
Imam ul Haq says proudly that Zaman and he also help each other while sitting. ‘When we are playing together, we indicate at each other’s mistakes, for example, when I am having difficulty making runs, Fakhar tells me that do not hurry and wait for a bad ball, I’ll score. And when he performs on fast bowling while playing high-shot shots, I understand that if there are not two runs in two balls, do not be worried because you are a batsman that can count on two balls.’
Imam ul Haq says media criticism forced them to become a better player. Since when, I have started international cricket, with the help of God, things are becoming easy for me. I want to give credit to my coaches. I will also mention the media in this regard who criticized my selection so much that I had thought that I had to prove that criticism wrong. The more criticism was being made on me, the more I started working. Even though I did not deserve to have been criticized, but its advantage was that I concentrated more on my game and matters became easy for me.
‘You can say that it is my memorable innings because of circumstances because it was my first test match, it was obvious that I was nervous too.’
Imam ul Haq New History:
Memorable innings of Imam ul Haq had 74 runs unbeaten in the match against Ireland. He says, “You can say that this is my memorable innings because it was my first test match, it was obvious that I was nervous too.” In the first innings I was out early and in the second innings, Pakistan’s three wickets had fallen just 14 runs. Conditions were helpful for the bowlers. I did not take any pressure on myself. Babar Azam and I had decided that I have to play my natural game and to get any bad ball. Babar Azam also played an important role in this regard. Unfortunately, he scored 59 runs and then got run out, but both of our innings will remain memorable.”
